Stumped on What to Wear to Your Holiday Celebration? We’ve Got Your Back!

It’s not easy dressing around the holidays. The season slams you with weather limitations, travel and comfort factors, a myriad of unique demands (something dressy for this, something dress casual for that), handling children, nieces and nephews - plus that feeling of overall fullness that follows a non-stop barrage of drinks, appetizers and dinner. Somehow, shimmying into dresses and trouser pants following one of the many meals the holidays bring is enough to put the kibosh on your style. Believe us, we know! Between the handful of freelancers, interns and writers, we’ve got a combined schedule of everything from Hanukkah gatherings to industry events to shopping trips with aunts and cousins.

Exhausting? You bet, and it hasn’t even started yet!

Which is why we’ve pulled together outfit combinations for your every last need – forget about the hassle of standing half-naked in front of your closet pondering what to wear – just print off these combinations and plug in your own pieces! While it may not solve all of your holiday fashion needs, hopefully you’ll get a few great ideas to make dressing the part all the easier.

Travel
The loungewear trend of years past has probably put more than enough casual pants and basics in your closet. Avoid looking dated by combining pants with a detailed or embellished closed toe flat, long sleeve tee and a cute scarf or hat.

Continental flights at most are a day of travel – hardly just cause for schlepping in pajamas or track suits! Go glam by mixing a cashmere sweater or wrap with simple jeans and ankle or knee boots. Work in a cute print scarf as a headband and bold jewelry. The bonus? Wearing bulky boots on the plane mean more space in your suitcase (plus you’ll look gorgeous in case you bump into any handsome strangers while on your trip).

Leggings are a great option for looking stylish without compromising comfort. Knit pieces are our top choice, especially with ribbing or side button detail, but even the most basic black pair can be made ultra chic. Wear with an oversized cardigan or heavy knit and flat sole knee boots.

Family Gathering
Trouser pants are the ultimate for the simple, slightly conservative environment a family gathering brings, plus you’re able to select from a variety of fabrics to keep your outfit low-key or dressy. For a trendy look, pair with a thin knit, V-neck sweater, belt over and slightly low on the hip and cute heels or flats. Or, work with a flouncy print top and pumps.

While cold weather may make you shy away from skirts and dresses, the season’s leggings and tights trend add a layer of warmth to keep you toasty yet looking sharp. Mix your Bermuda shorts from summer with wooly tights, a heavy sweater and flat sole boots for opening gifts, or try a winter dress with leggings.

Good old denim can be the perfect item for a casual holiday get together with relatives. Dress it up with a pretty top or sweater, adding in leather knee boots or a heel. Finishing touches are key – jewelry, accessories, etc., will punch up the outfit and add an element of style. Wrap sweaters, cardigans and oversized knits are popular year after year – combine them with a floaty chiffon top or lacy camisole for a dressier look.

Evening Party
A little bling goes a long way! Turn basic pieces into a sensational party outfit simply by adding something detailed or unique. A lace bed jacket paired with tweed trousers and suede or velvet flats, an embellished tunic with a dark denim mini, tights and boots. The ticket is to keep the dazzle to a single item and keep the rest of the outfit basic.

Winterize a strapless dress by finishing off with a cropped faux fur jacket or cozy wrap. You can also layer a long sleeve, fitted t-shirt underneath – just be sure to work a statement shoe to add a dressy feel.

Substitute traditional dress pants with a pair of tweed or jersey knickers! It’s a cute look with tights and heels or boots. Add in a statement top and you’re party ready!
