How To Wear Maxi Dresses
Ways To Work This Easy, Breezy Basic For Summer

6/6/2011 2:04:18 PM
The maxi dress is hardly new on the fashion scene but it's without a doubt become a key item that women everywhere have on heavy rotation -- with good reason. Nothing creates an instant style vibe than a key piece like this, and you couldn't ask for something easier -- or more comfortable -- to wear than this one. Whether you're going with a chic print or solid color, chic cotton jersey or silk, strapless or triangle top, the maxi dress wears as easy as a casual basic but packs a hip, fashionable punch.

Now that you've gotten yours in your closet, here's how to work it:

1. Trendy -- The hip kids are working the maxi with unexpected items like fitted sweatshirts and sweaters, hoodies and leather jackets, topped with goddess style flat sandals or simple flip flops. Long, pendant style necklaces, or whatever interesting jewelry you might wear with everything else will work. For evening, it's all about subtle glam -- put your hair up, add a little bold jewelry and stick to a strappy sandal over a flip flop. Layer triangle and other style tops over tank tops to mix the look up.

2. Classic -- Classic girls will love this piece for it's effortless style and statement -- this is the kind of piece you love! Wear the dress alone with fabulous but simple jewelry, like a long pendant, drop earrings or arm full of bangles. A metallic flat strappy sandal will keep the look polished, but if you go with a flip flop that can be just as chic. If you want to go a little trendy, throw on a leather jacket with yours for evening, or a cute hoodie or cardigan for day.

3. Casual -- If your style is casual, the maxi dress is going to likely be a style staple all summer long. This is a perfect piece for pulling off trend/style feel without making anything fussy, so it's great for students and stay at home moms. Work this for a day on campus or lunch with your friends instead of the usual tee and jeans or lounge wear. It'll be just as comfortable! If you want to mix it up a tiny bit, wear tank and triangle top style dresses over contrast tank tops, or throw on a cute hoodie or hooded sweatshirt. Finish with flip flops.

While the maxi is ultra easy to work, it can be a bit of a trick to buy. Petite women CAN pull this off -- you'll appreciate how it elongates your frame! -- but the key for you is to make sure there isn't too much fabric or you'll look overwhelmed. No matter what your height, you'll want the dress to barely graze the ground in flat feel or flat sandals -- anything higher will break up the clean line and can make your body appear short/stumpy no matter what height you are. Heels are fine with maxis but make sure you follow the same aesthetic as above. You want to keep the maxi's long, lean line for the best look. If strapless styles aren't supportive enough, fear not -- you can find the maxi dress in triangle, V and tank styles if you keep hunting, or pair them over a tank top so you can hide a supportive bra.
